Simply collect testimonials

collect testimonials,
who sell.

You do really good work. Your customer testimonials sound more like eBay testimonials that just say: “Everything was great, I’d be happy to do it again.” Then no one from the outside will understand that you are really good. In this guide, you'll learn how to collect customer testimonials to sell for you.

The instructions in short form

A good testimonial shows what problem your customer had and how you helped them. Ask about it when he has experienced the result of your collaboration. In a conversation he tells you what it was like before, what helped him working together and what has changed since then. You turn this into a customer testimonial, have them approve it and show it on your website.

Why short testimonials like the ones you see all the time on websites aren't enough.

You help your customers, bring them good results and regularly receive positive feedback. There's hardly anything about it on your website. Anyone who reads your references there will only find out that the collaboration was “great”. This could be the same for any of your competitors.

This is often due to how you ask for customer feedback. If you simply send your customer a Google link, they will have to think of what to write. But he doesn't know which parts of his experience are important for your next dream customer.

Make it easy for him and ask him specific questions. If you walk him through his experience, he can tell you a lot more than “Everything was great, I’d be happy to do it again.”

Sounds nice, but has no meaning.

"The collaboration was great. Very professional and always punctual."

This is what your ideal customer wants to know.

What problem did you have? What has changed? How do you notice this today?

When reading, your dream customer wants to understand whether you know their problem and have already helped someone who was in a similar situation. That's why the customer testimonial should show how your customer got from their original problem to the desired result.

01ProblemYour dream customer should recognize themselves here.
02The collaborationThis is where your dream customer should recognize that you are the right person to contact.
03The resultHere the customer should recognize that he also wants this result.
The customer journey is the common thread. Your reader should see themselves in it.

01 / The base

The basis for good testimonials: enthusiastic customers.

If you want to have enthusiastic customer testimonials, you also have to offer your customer a collaboration that they can enthusiastically talk about. This includes being organized, keeping promises and taking work off his hands. It gets really exciting when you think for yourself and give him something that he can put to good use.

An example would be to give a customer a slideshow template that fits the new design after the website project. This allows him to directly create his own content for social media. It's a bonus that he didn't expect and that makes his job easier.

Make sure you go the extra mile and give your client the results they expected from the collaboration. Then show him what you have achieved. In everyday life you quickly forget what it was like before.

So ask him before you start working together: “On a scale of 1 to 10, where do you currently stand in these areas?” Choose the areas that you want to improve together. After working together, you ask him the exact same questions.

This is how you make progress visible

You can then say to him, for example: "Eight weeks ago you ranked yourself at a 3. Now you say you are at a 9. So we helped you improve your performance by six points."

Bam. Now your customer can see for themselves how far they have come and that they have achieved their goal. Of course you have to deliver. Once you've done that, help him see that progress too. He can talk about exactly that later in his testimonial.

02 / The timing

When should you ask for a testimonial?

When a project is completed, you'll want to ask for a customer testimonial straight away. Depending on what you did for your customer, they may not have experienced the result for which they hired you at this point.

When I ask directly about the website launch, my client can tell me that they like the design and the collaboration went well. But if I instead wait until the customer receives inquiries about their website, then they can talk about what the website has specifically achieved for their company.

An example from my customer projects10 new projects.

Tim Jaschke won ten new projects via his website in the first month after the launch. If I had asked him for a testimonial right before we went live, he wouldn't have been able to tell you about it.

View Tim's testimonial →

Three signals you can pay attention to

  • Your customer reports back with success. For example, with new inquiries or a goal that has been achieved.
  • Your work together is having an impact. A campaign or published project brings the desired result.
  • Relevant feedback comes from outside. For example, if the new design triggers exactly the reaction that your customer hired you for.

So think about what result your customer wanted to achieve through the collaboration. If he hired you to get more requests, then ask as soon as those requests come. Then he can tell you exactly whether and how you helped him.

03 / The request

How to ask customers for a testimonial.

If your customer tells you enthusiastically about a result, this is a good opportunity to ask them for a testimonial. Be happy with him and suggest that you record his experience in a short conversation.

This is what your message could look like

Hey [name], great that [specific result] worked now! I'm really pleased.

Would you be okay if we recorded your experience as a customer voice? I would ask you a few questions. You don't have to prepare anything or write a text. I will prepare your answers and send everything to you for approval.

You can send your customer a short form, for example with seven questions that are displayed one after the other. This way he doesn't have to sit in front of an empty text box and think about how to start. If you would like more detailed answers, go through the questions with him in a call and agree beforehand that you will record the conversation.

From a short form to a detailed testimonial call

For a detailed testimonial call, you can prepare 15 questions and plan around 15 to 30 minutes. You go through the questions with your customer and let them talk in peace. Some answers take one to two minutes, others are shorter. If he can't think of a question, you just move on to the next one. The experiences that remain in his mind and that he can describe to you in his own words are interesting.

You can use the 15 questions below directly for your conversation. Listen to your customer's answers and ask questions if you are interested in something more specific. You adapt the questions about numbers to the goal of your collaboration, such as more inquiries, less effort or better processes.

When inviting your customer, tell them that you will take care of the preparation. He just has to answer your questions and then receives the finished text to read. So he doesn't have to prepare or write a text himself.

04 / The question guide

15 questions for your testimonial interview

“Were you happy?” can be answered with one word. “What was your problem before we worked together?” opens a conversation.

First, go through with your customer what problem they had and what they wanted to achieve. Then you talk about your collaboration, his results and who he would recommend you to. These questions will help you:

  1. What was your problem before we worked together? How did it affect your everyday life or in the company, and what did you want to change?
  2. What thoughts almost stopped you from working with me?Were there any concerns, doubts or previous experiences that played a role in your decision?
  3. What was your WOW moment in our collaboration? When did you realize that working together was really beneficial for you?
  4. What has changed in the most important key figure for your goal? What was the status before and where are you today? These can be, for example, requests per month, processing times or error rates.
  5. What specific successes have you achieved since then? What was added over what period of time, such as new customers, completed projects or saved working hours?
  6. What did our collaboration bring you financially? Can you roughly say how much additional revenue you generated or costs you saved?
  7. What else does the collaboration bring you, apart from these numbers? What is easier, more pleasant or possible today that wasn't possible before?
  8. How does the result affect other areas of your company? For example, does your marketing, sales or team benefit from this? What works better there now?
  9. Why did you choose me and not someone else? What convinced you and what was particularly important to you when making the decision?
  10. What feedback have you received from others since then? What do customers, interested parties or employees say about the changes?
  11. How has our collaboration impacted your business overall? What has changed for you as an entrepreneur or for your everyday work?
  12. Does the result suit your company and your requirements? How do you know that it suits you and reflects what you stand for?
  13. What advice would you give to someone who is still considering working with me?What do you think this person should know before making a decision?
  14. If someone asked you what it was like working with me: what would you say?How did you experience the communication, the process and the personal collaboration?
  15. What else would you like to say to someone who is reading or watching your experience? Is there anything we haven't discussed yet that is important to you?

If your customer says something has gotten “much better,” ask: “Do you have an example of that?” or “How did you notice that?” Maybe he will now receive more inquiries or save his team several hours of work each week. Maybe he can think of a specific situation that was difficult before and is now going smoothly. Such answers will help your dream client understand the outcome.

Your customer delivers the experience.
You help him tell them tangibly.

05 / The use

Use testimonials as text, video and short clips.

Some visitors want to listen to your customer in the video, others prefer to read through their experience. Once you have recorded the testimonial call, you can offer them both and also use short excerpts for social media.

The whole text

For people who want to understand the initial situation, collaboration and results.

The video

For voice, emotion and the person behind the experience.

A short excerpt

A concrete result or an important moment as an introduction to the whole story.

A slide show

Show the change step by step instead of simply making a long text smaller.

Keep the entire recording and find the answers that are also understandable as a short clip. This can be an answer to the original problem or the place where your customer talks about their result. A conversation with 15 questions can create several clips, which you can publish individually after it has been approved.

If your customer provides specific numbers, you can highlight them next to the video. For Tim, for example, that would be the ten new projects in the first month. This means your visitor can immediately see the result behind the customer's opinion.

From video to text testimonial: transcribe, edit and share.

Your customer has already told you his story. With a transcript, you can turn it into a written testimonial without having to write it all down again. This is how you do it:

  1. Have the full interview transcribed.Load the recording into a transcription program. It converts the spoken answers into text, so you don't have to type out the conversation yourself.
  2. Turn the transcript into a readable text testimonial.Read through the transcript and compare any unclear parts with the recording. Remove filler words and repetition and organize answers by problem, collaboration, and outcome. Write from your customer's perspective and keep his wording the same so that the text sounds like him.
  3. Send your customer the finished text for approval.Your customer reads the text and tells you whether everything fits or whether he would like to change anything. Also show him the video excerpts you want to use so that you can coordinate everything before publishing.
  4. Make publishing easy for him.If you would also like a review, send him the coordinated text and the direct link, for example to your Google profile or to Trustpilot. Then he has his experience already formulated in front of him and can publish it himself.

One conversation, several formats: You have the long video for your website, short clips for social media and a written testimonial. Your customer answers your questions and releases the result. You take care of the preparation.

This is how you present a detailed testimonial.

Show the video with an appropriate preview image and add a strong statement from your customer next to it. Add his name, position and company. Below you can highlight the original problem, the collaboration and the result. Your visitor will then understand what it's about before it starts playing and can decide whether they want to watch the whole story.

Where do testimonials belong on your website?

Place customer testimonials where you explain what you achieve for your customers. For example, if you write that your offer brings more qualified inquiries, this corresponds to the experience of a customer who has achieved exactly that. Show a strong message directly on the page and make the detailed text or video easily accessible.

You can see what that can look like in mine Client testimonials. There you will find texts and videos from customers with different starting points. If you also want to understand how we built their websites, check them out detailed case studies on.

What our clients say about their websites .

On track to reach €1 million in revenue this year.

My sales page TextTextBaby.com, designed by Kris, has been online for 2 years now and is on the way to breaking the €1 million revenue mark this year. The site is perfectly optimized for selling my online course. The site sells so well that no changes have been necessary in the last 2 years. What I really appreciate about working with Kris is that he made sure before each of my launches that everything was working technically perfectly. Kris left nothing to chance. The result: Sales have doubled from launch to launch. Kris from Krisnetics is by far the best web designer I have ever worked with. Kris works super efficiently, quickly and very professionally. He only settles for WOW and has exceeded my wildest expectations. Long story short: If you want a website that sells, go to Kris.

In total, the website has generated CHF 60,000–80,000 in revenue.

My goal was a website that reaches customers and encourages them to get in touch and book an introductory meeting or a strategy call. The old site couldn't do that. The new one does. What impressed me is the process behind it. Kris asks the right questions: Who is the desired customer? What is he looking for? How does the website have to be structured to work? This wasn't just a design project, but real strategic work. The blog was a particular challenge. Over 400 articles must remain structured and navigable. This works now. We have a separate section for each customer in which their blog articles are bundled. My content manager Silvan finds his way around very well, and apparently so do the readers. The website is now a central component in my acquisition process. My customers, often marketing heads, first discover me on LinkedIn, then listen to the podcast, go to the website, and read blog articles. These are many touchpoints that together lead to someone buying. The website is one of the most important of them. In concrete numbers: At least 25 calls were booked through the website. This resulted in two to three clients with projects worth between 10,000 and 40,000 francs. In total, we are talking about 60,000 to 80,000 francs in sales that were generated directly via the website. What I didn't expect: Kris also gave me a lead magnet that we used to promote the website. Around 50 downloads resulted in conversations and customers. The idea was so good that I adopted the concept and integrated it into my own offering. Our customers now also receive lead magnets as part of our content production. Thank you for the inspiration Kris! Kris also leveraged his own network to create additional reach for my website. This goes beyond what you would expect from a website designer. I still like the design. The website is my digital business card, professional and associated with my name. It would take a lot for me to want to change it. I would recommend the collaboration to anyone who pays attention to quality, appreciates structure and needs a reliable website. Regardless of whether you are a coach, consultant, business owner or craftsman. Anyone who is open to the process and the right questions will get a website that is convincing. The collaboration was constructive and pleasant. I always knew what was coming next.

In the first six weeks after the launch, eight to ten inquiries came in, including one project that was commissioned.

Before working with Kris, our website was something we didn’t pay much attention to. We ran Google Ads, but enquiries were few and far between: one some months, three in others. It was never reliable. There were no references or recent projects on the site, even though that’s exactly what potential clients want to see. As building services engineers, we get a lot of work through recommendations and long-standing partners. But when someone who didn’t know us visited the website, it didn’t show what we were capable of or what we’d already achieved. Deciding to invest in another redesign wasn’t easy. A website is entirely digital. You spend a significant amount without having anything physical to show for it, so you naturally wonder whether it will pay off. I found Kris on LinkedIn. His posts about what a website should actually do really resonated with me. We wanted more than a good-looking site: it needed to bring in enquiries. That combination of design and sales impact was what made the difference for us. The process was very structured. Kris asked the right questions up front and gave the whole project a clear direction. You could see how much thought he’d put into guiding visitors through the website and helping them make a decision. All our communication happened on his platform, so nothing got lost between email and WhatsApp. That made it easy to look things up later. The results speak for themselves. In the first six weeks after launch, we received eight to ten enquiries, including a confirmed project. That one project alone paid for the website. One client even said she’d called because she liked the new site. It also helps in sales conversations because I can show our recent projects instead of just describing them. If your business doesn’t rely entirely on existing contacts, and potential clients research you online before getting in touch, I can wholeheartedly recommend working with Kris.

15–20 bookings in the first month, and mid-five-figure revenue.

My old website was hurting my business more than helping it. It no longer reflected who I am, or who we are. When working with service providers, two factors are always very important to me when making a purchase. First of all, that I know the person personally. And secondly, of course, very clearly (even more important): visible results! I got both from Kris. Working with Kris, I found the structure to be very strong. You are systematically taken by the hand and accompanied through the process. That was awesome. And that makes a huge difference between Kris and others. We had about 15 to 20 people register for an appointment through the website in the first month, regardless of what was coming in through other sources. Since going live, I have gained 6 customers and achieved mid-five-figure sales. The website now generates trust. And now, in terms of branding, building trust, expert status, customer opinions, video quality, design, etc., there is definitely a decent level up compared to before. Kris is a great guy: relaxed, quick to act and well organised. He understands what you do straight away. Goes the extra mile and is only satisfied when the result is good for him and you. If you already have an organic source of people or followers and want to turn them into appointments, then I highly recommend you contact Kris to turn your website into something that sells.

We are getting more appointments than before, an average of two per week, and it was absolutely worth the investment.

I’m one of the owners of Gruber Folien GmbH. We manufacture flexible packaging, mainly bags made from plastic film. We’re a medium-sized business with 50 employees, and we produce in Germany. We did get some clients through the old website, but not as many as we do since the redesign. Most came through outreach and word of mouth. We also make custom products, and there aren’t that many suppliers who do that. Our old website looked very good, but it sometimes gave people the wrong impression. It wasn’t bringing in the clients who were right for our range. You couldn’t clearly see what we did or who we did it for. The shop dominated the site, which made the products immediately visible. But we also manufacture for large corporations, and the shop didn’t really speak to them. I hadn’t realised how poorly the website was performing. I liked the way it looked, and design matters to me. It was only after hearing Kris’s ideas and understanding his approach that we saw what was missing. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have changed it. I discovered Kris through a LinkedIn post. His work and his approach really appealed to me. That was what I wanted. I didn’t have any doubts. From the first questions to the process he’d put together, everything was transparent. We felt we were in good hands from the start. Working together went really well. I liked how he found out what we needed and then built the site around our audience. Kris also brought his expertise to the table. He was clear and honest about what would work, what wouldn’t, and what he’d advise against. That helped us a lot. The implementation went to plan, and we reached a result quickly. Apart from the design, the most valuable part was the regular feedback and check-ins. The process felt different from other projects right from the start. Kris uses modern communication tools and has automated a lot, which saves clients unnecessary calls. You can work through the questions and provide your input whenever you have time. Since the new website went live, the feedback has been consistently positive. Clients find their way around more easily and feel that the website speaks to them. We added Calendly for bookings, which saves our sales team time. People seem more comfortable booking a call that way. We get more appointments than before, an average of two a week. We’re very happy with that, particularly because we’re a specialist manufacturer, not a consultancy. We’ve already won clients through the new website, too. When someone asks about our website now, I feel good about sharing it. The homepage answers so many of the questions that matter to clients, including ‘What’s in it for me?’ It’s a long page, as Kris recommended, because that’s where most visitors spend their time. That approach has absolutely worked. Was it worth the investment? Absolutely. The website performs better. I wouldn’t say Kris is only suited to one industry. His portfolio covers very different businesses. The approach behind his work applies across industries. We’re a manufacturer rather than a B2B service business, and it worked for us too. If you’re where we were, I’d definitely recommend getting in touch and having an initial conversation. Working together was really good, and we saw results quickly. The whole thing took no more than six months. When it could have moved faster, that was mostly down to us, not Kris.

More ideal clients, more rewarding coaching journeys, 40% more revenue.

The hero section is pure magic. And the testimonials really work. My old website was not of high quality in terms of design and was not structured in terms of sales psychology. Too few (strong) references. I wanted to find more dream clients. People who inspire and challenge me. People with whom I feel a connection. People who are ready to commit to high-priced coaching. The result of the collaboration with Kris: Extremely cool design that does justice to the high quality of the coaching. More inquiries and deals from dream customers. The inspiration for the "Impact Club" - my dream project for 2024 - the implementation of my vision :) My wow moments were: The hero section, pure magic, and the impact of the testimonials. Your website is not just a landing page. It has a big impact on your business. So make sure it does justice to your business. Redesigning it with Kris is absolutely worth it! LinkedIn comment from Peter: Still magical! Thanks for the artwork. Not only beautiful, but also very effective. More and more dream customers come, even more exciting coaching journeys, 40% more revenue. Thanks for your great work. Dear Kris, When we worked together, I always felt how important it was to you to really help and provide added value. That was also crucial for me to create the new website with you – and not with someone else. Update: 40% more revenue will turn into around 55-60% this year. And the best part about it isn't even the percentage, but WHO I get to work WITH. More and more dream customers end up with me - the people for whom I can be there best. Above all, thank you for that!

Any questions about obtaining testimonials?

How long should a good testimonial be?

Your dream customer should understand what problem the customer had, how you helped them, and what the outcome was. If your service requires a lot of explanation, the customer testimonial can be correspondingly detailed. Make a strong statement about it on your website and give visitors a chance to read the whole experience.

Is a Google review enough as a customer testimonial?

A detailed Google review can tell a lot about your work. But if it just says “everything’s great,” that won’t be of much help to your dream customer. Therefore, go through with your customer what their problem was and what has changed as a result of your collaboration. From this he can also make a meaningful assessment.

What do I do if my client doesn't have time to write?

Offer a conversation or a short form with individual questions. Then prepare his answers as text and have it checked and approved. So your customer has to tell their experience, but not write a finished advertising copy.

Can I shorten or reword a testimonial?

If you shorten repetitions or combine spoken answers into one text, send your customer the finished version to proofread. He should recognize himself in it and confirm to you that you have portrayed his experience correctly. You can then publish the text.

Now it's your turn

Which customer last told you about a success?

Write to this person and ask them if they would like to tell you about their experience in a short conversation. You now have the question guide. All you have to do is make an appointment and listen.

Treat yourself to customer testimonials that finally show what you can do.
